How to sample - water

(Wynland Laboratories takes no responsibility for any sampling done. This can only be used as guidlines, but your consultant should be contacted for more information on sampling)

For Microbiological Analysis (At least 500 ml required)

  • Container: Bottles are available from lab on request or use clean, boiled water bottle and lid (plastic/glass)

  • Keep container closed until it will be filled

Filling procedure:

  • 500ml (1liter for SANS) water

  • Water from taps/hoses/running water: let water run for approximately 5 mins before sampling

  • Deliver as soon as possible (<24 h)

  • Keep sample in fridge (<10 °C)

  • Do not expose to direct sunlight

For Chemical Analysis (At least 1 liter required - or see table below)

  • Clean plastic or glass containers or bottles are suitable for sampling (Clean, sealed containers is available from the laboratory upon request)

  • Keep container closed until is will be filled

  • Filling procedures:

    • Potable/Borehole water - open tap and let it flow for a minute.  Open the bottle cap and fill the bottle to the top avoiding any air above the sample.   Important:  Ensure that nothing else comes into contact with the bottle, except for the sample when filling.  Close bottle cap tightly, place in a cooler box to prevent temperature fluctuations (preferably kept below 10C) and send to the lab within 6-24h of sampling time.

    • Source water - open bottle and rinse twice with sample. Plunge bottle under water at elbow length if possible, away form the inlet.  Fill bottle to the top, avoiding any air above the sample.  Close bottle cap tightly, place in a cooler box to prevent temperature fluctuations (preferably kept below 10C) and send to the lab within 6-24h of sampling time.

  • Please label all samples as descriptive as possible - include sampling site and date.

  • Please note:

    • incorrect sampling procedures may lead to inaccurate results
